So, now No-shave November is at an end, and you got yourself a pretty decent looking beard; so, you think. That is until your buddy that you hang out with every day shows up and you start to gaze at the majestic Man-Mane of his.
Now, you are just not feeling so bearded. Maybe you may think that your beard now does not seem as think as you once thought. Or, maybe you seen other beard styles that you just cannot seem to emulate right now. You may think at that moment, discouraged about having a beard. You may wish that you could snap your fingers and go forward in time to a thicker beard.
You’re not alone!
"When you first start growing out your beard it is easy to get caught up in the age-old myth of “Bigger is always Better”; better for what?"
With so many beards out there, it is easy to get caught up with comparing your beard to others. However, some comparisons can cause you to wish your beard was fuller, Longer, Shinier, Thicker, Thinner, Or a different color. The list could be endless.
Bigger is not Always Better
When you first start growing out your beard it is easy to get caught up in the age-old myth of “Bigger is always Better”; better for what?
At the beginning of your beard journey it can become easy to get caught up in trap of defining yourself by your beard. Once your beard ushers in the confidence you may have been seeking it can become logical to you that a bigger beard equals more confidence. Therefore, Bigger means Better; Wrong! Additionally, to add further scrutiny to your already tattered ego, people may try to drill into your head that a bigger beard is a testament to your genetics. Again, a Bigger Beard means better.
If you allow these stereotypes to cloud your mind, this will corollate to a lack of confidence in your beard, and yourself. Ultimately, as with all emotions, people will begin to sense it.
Over time, this lack of self-confidence can LEAD to low self-esteem, which can reduce the quality of a person's life in many different ways. Unchecked, low self-esteem may even LEAD to mental health issues such as anxiety and DEPRESSION, sometimes with tragic results. It is toxic.
We are What We Think We Are
A while back I wrote an article entitled “Make Your Beard Your Brand – A Business Approach to Beards” where I discuss how to make a statement about who you are, and then own that. However, I was not speaking towards owning something physical. I was speaking towards your psyche. I was speaking about perception. We ARE what we THINK we are, and in order to BEHAVE differently, we need to THINK differently. All of your behavior is driven by the emotional state that you are in, change your emotion, change your behavior. Why is it the same water that hardens an egg, also has the ability to soften a potato? This is because of what it is made of, and you are no different. Perception drives sales in marketing, perception influences your judgement and decision-making process, and perception dictates sociological stereotypes.
As such, if you want to be different, you need to believe different, and you will then feel different. As before, people can perceive your confidence level. It’s only when we begin to examine and realize the false inner perceptions within our mind that we can begin to awaken an intelligence that originates from beyond the realm of thinking.
Control the Mind, and the Body Will Follow
Have you ever seen that guy who doesn’t look anything like he should be the center of attention, but ends up attracting everyone in the room towards him, like a magnet? He walks funny, isn’t the most attractive, has a patchy beard, and wears strange clothes. But people stop and take notice when he walks into a room. Why is that? It’s because he’s supremely confident.
The physiological states of depression such as low mood, discouragement, low self-esteem and feeling drained can be a factor in reducing the hair growth phase, leading to hair loss.
Giving yourself a break may lead to a better you. There internet is full of science of how self esteem can lead to so many things. How mental can lead to physical. Maybe, by feeling adequate, will lead to you being more adequate. The brain responds to whatever you tell it. Think about it, think of something that makes your heart smile, like a baby, a puppy, a kitten, or a steak. See how this changes the way you feel.
No Two Beards Are the Same – Neither Are People
No two beards are the same. The same can be said about two people. Eye color, hair color, fingerprints, and DNA. So why is it that we insist on comparing ourselves to others when we are nothing like them, or ever will be for that matter.
This is what I mean be owning your identity, own the fact that you are truly, unique. You are you and no one else will ever be you. Own that. Who cares if your beard is patchy, or even growing fully? Using beard products is not just about achieving a better beard, it is about achieving a better us. The mineral and vitamins alone can lead to a healthier body, resulting in a better you.
Make your statement, own who you are, and perceive yourself as you want to be perceived. I really hope this helps you on your beard journey.
