We have all heard our fair share of 'anti-beard internet nonsense' over the years, usually some sort of made up ''scientific study'' or ''survey'' takes place that instantly shames and labels our beards as filth buckets that should be chopped off at once with no further questions asked. Well, after spending more than my fair share of time defending our beard-manes this week i continue to tear up those beard myths that might still be floating around on your social media accounts. Here's a short list of beard myths proven to be nothing more than internet trolling spillage nonsense...
A BEARD MAKES YOU LOOK UNATTRACTIVE.
Ok, you could argue the toss that this one falls down to personal preferences. But a study by the Evolution & Human Behaviour took place in Australia (YES, A REAL LIFE STUDY!) proved that most of the women who were asked prefered some form of facial hair growth on a gentleman. Some liked the 'goatee' style beard, others enjoyed the 'shadow beard' stubble, whilst many prefered the full beard look the most. It was indeed the small minority who prefered a clean shaven face.
BEARDS ARE UNCOMFY AND ITCH ALL THE TIME
The only time most will experience any form of itching will be in the early stages of facial hair growth. But this stage only lasts a matter of weeks and does not remain a 24/7 constant itch. Once this stage passes you'll notice your beard would have began to take shape. As long Itchiness can occur due to dry skin, but maintain a clean and healthy beard with our range of TBS tonics and balms and this factor should not play a problem in your bearding lifestyle.
BEARDS MAKE YOU HOT AND SWEATY IN THE SUMMER MONTHS
Some men choose to chop down the facial fluff in the summer on the belief that it may help keep them cooler in the seasonal heatwaves, many regret doing so almost instantly. Truth be told shaving off your beard will play little if any part in helping to keep you any cooler. Your beard actually works as a sun shelter keeping the sunshine away from your face working as a form of shade; whereas a naked clean shaven face soaks up the suns rays which could lead to sun damage. And let's face it, a sunburnt face isnt all that fun!
SHAVING YOUR BEARD WILL SPEED UP THE BEARD GROWING PROCESS
This is one of the most common questions i get asked the most when people speak to me for bearding advice. It is often believed that if you chop an inch or so off your beard it will encourage your beard to grow a little faster. I can categorically tell you this is NOT the case. I can only assume this came to light with the similarities of hair growth. A hair stylist some years ago stated to me when i took my daughter for her routine hair cut that if you remove the split/dead ends from your hair it helps speed up your hairs growth. But if this is to be true you have to remember that facial hair is far from the same as the hair produced on your head. Its much courser, tougher and wirey in comparison. By all means keep your beard trimmed and in shape if you've met the desired length or choose to do so. But if you're growing your beard out long i personally recommend you trim nothing whatsoever from the length, keep it clean and knot free by combing it often and apply plenty of TBS balms daily. Another great pointer to remember is neatening up your sideburns every few months can actually make your beard appear longer!
So, there you have it! Another collection of beard myths de-bugged! Thanks for taking the time to read and I'll see you all again next week!
